The Constant Shore

Timeless, enduring, constant -- the dunes are deceptive in appearance. A surge with a nor'easter shouts at them -- they are not so constant after all.
Acrylic on canvas (20" x 24")
They are changeable, eroding, losing ground - every year.

Being Mindful

It's routine - cut out the paper, place it just so forming the design -- it must be whole from the start. Paste it all down, carefully - watch out for the sticky parts! Draw!

Papiers Colles with ink (6" x 4")
Be mindful, be mindful, be mindful! Don't go into a day dream. What are you doing? Where is that pen going? Where do you want it to go and what do you want it to do? Guide it.
 Know when to let go.
Sometimes, right to the end, it is unforgiving.

Dragons

There are many species of dragons!

Papiers colles 17 Feb 2107 (6" x 4")

Some are more fierce than others.

The Playful Dunes

They beckon in the summer casting an allure of sparkling seas and warm sands.

The Playful Dunes (a study), (acrylic on paper, 15"x 22")
Winter, not so  much; repelling in the austere cold of a windswept, below zero prospect of fortitude.

The North Shore

It is an old shore, this north shore. Exploring the coast on canvas, I searched out the qualities of the grasses; I asked about the shapes of the cliffs and in so doing tried to capture that elusive colour and movement of the water.

"The North Shore" (acrylic on canvas, 12" x 16")
It is an internal conversation with unseen links and threads --  and surfaces again with a need for expression.

Scuttling Sky

I saw the clouds over the harbour in layers of colour and form. The sky changes the dynamics of the land and the sea.

I know that sky, I thought -- it's the one I painted in 2002 -- Scuttling Sky.
"Scuttling Sky" 2002
It scurries, oh so quickly; it is hasty!

All in a Row (reprised)

It speaks of ditches and windbreaks, of fields, and wayward seeds making a soft landing, protected from the plough and the combine.
Spruce in a Row (12" x 9" on paper)
A landing that favours growth and nurtures seedlings. A demarcation line.
