The Last Light of the Day

The last light of the day, so hard to catch -- you cannot paint pure light.

Midsummer

The summer solstice; it is the anticipation of the warmth of the earth, the beauty of a flowering world. It is a festival of brilliant light and long days.

The Western Sky

The brilliance of the focused intensity of the setting sun makes up for its all too brief appearance during the days of shortened light.
(2017, canvas 16"x12")

Resolve is needed.

Sky Infusion

The light stays in liquid form, I think.

Timeless Passing revisted - a Triptych

Time passes, endlessly.
It passes in sunsets, each the same, yet not the same. It passes in the moonrise, in the full moon, in the new moon, in the stars forever shining. Streaming.

Timeless Passing Triptych (3 panels 16" x 12")
Time passes marking its way in the ebb and flow of waterways in constant motion; the water of yesterday, the water of today in a cycle that continues unceasingly. The centre, extended to the left and to the right, or perhaps to the north and to the south or to the east and the west. Will it hold?

Timeless Passing

Time passes. No matter what situation you are in; time will pass. Today you are comfortable, at home, at ease; tomorrow you are traveling, perhaps delayed, inconvenienced, put upon, perceived as a "widget" because of some business class (no, not that Business Class) wherein is explained how to squeeze the most out of the least. Hmmmm.

Timeless passing -- a part of the natural world; that world that we are so divorced from that we rarely notice its passing. It passes in sunsets, each the same, yet not the same. It passes in the moonrise, in the full moon, in the new moon, in the stars forever shining. Their light streaming but not in real time.

Timeless passing then marks the ebb and flow of waterways. The water of yesterday passes, yet it is the water of today.

The Butternut Tree

They like to mow down the weeds to keep everything neat and tidy; nature is so messy! Young trees barely bigger than a large weed are clipped in the process -- "don't put your head up so high there"

When they rise up and grow -- if they escape the mower long enough -- they have multiple stalks and beautiful forms.

Fields (liberated ones)

Free of woods, free of buildings, free of debris, they seem to move with the wind. Open land, cleared and enclosed but not magnetic. Not the meta in the data, not the field in the record. Cleared for landing, for grounding, a parcel, a lot -- a lot of lots, spruce barrens and fallow.

Weed research, foraging for biodiversity.

Atmospheric Layers #2

Expressing an intense emotional atmosphere of anxiety, the approaching mood is heralded by an
unnatural stillness.

The tone of the day is set -- as is the sun.

Dancing Partners

Trees on windswept islands partner in a dance with the wind.

Bow first at the beginning. Bow last at the end.

Sunset Dance

Autumn light leaves early; the colours on days when the temperature is "crisp"are intense. After the leaves have fallen, after they've been raked up and carted away, the grass is left still green waiting for the snow.

The tree dances in the wind.

Blue Spruce

Native to the American West, this spruce is an ornamental tree, decorous on urban lawns.

It is a tree of humility -- especially when it curves or grows bent under piles of winter snow. It bows its head as it grows old, knowing perhaps that it will be replaced before it gets too large.

Urban Tree

Trees in landscape, trees in forests, trees on farms, on shores, on lakes, reflecting in water, are eloquent. Trees that become one following the horizon, inspire. Always!

I paint trees in settings other than where they actually are. Blues and greens in the bark after a rain have a special hue. I admire the shape of a tree when the leaves have gone and I have a lingering regret when the spring fills the branches with beautiful leaves.

Urban trees are sometimes small, struggling, boxed in by concrete, hacked at by drivers not adept at parallel parking. Mature trees in old neighbourhoods are scarred by electric companies that feel the need to leave gaping holes in these things of beauty.

Acrylic on paper (30" x 22")

One of my tributes to the urban tree.

Evening Sky

Friends went kayaking on the Brudenell River on a summer evening. Looking back at the sky one turned to the other and exclaimed, "Look, we are in a Louise Mould painting".

I like to think that this is that painting.

Uncertain Ground

This painting shifted in concept and composition from my original idea. I continued my exploration of the subject, letting it lead me where it needed to go, letting go of my direction. The ambiguities in the composition speak of  uncertainties, in life and the physical geography of where we live.

Uncertain Ground (acrylic on canvas 24" x 20")

Storms, tides, earthquakes, and other natural disasters erode convictions. Contemplating life and the mercurial changes around us, this painting speaks to me of the uncertainties of life.
