Accidents -- the Oops of the Unforgiving

I take note of accidents, those slips of the pen, with inner annoyance and silent curses; those unintended lines; the "unforgiving" part of working with black ink on white paper.

Ink drawing (8.5" x 5.5")

Ink drawing (8.5" x 5.5")
"What has happened?" I exclaim (not so silent after all). Is it catastrophic? Is salvage an option for a fumble, for butterfingers? Can it be saved from destruction, saved from a wreck? Perhaps though the fumble is the solution?

Escaping the Page

Lunar phases circling with regularity; the tides moving with them on a daily basis. We question the pull that orients the flow, that causes tidal bores and storm surges.

Ink on paper (6" x 4")
Waxing and waning in crescents and orbs, craters rotate in view of everyone.
Then there is the light!
Not to mention the cheese!

The Shouter

What motivates this?

Such a display!

Layers of the Earth

Layers of soil fold-in and re-form in layers of landscape. Earth shaped by wind and water, by farming and mining, full of ups and downs.

Sedimentary layers deposited by slow movements -- almost sedentary, seemingly still and dependable, surprising us sometimes by upheaval. What fault can we find with this?

The Sky Plays While We Sleep

Reflecting the light of the sun the moon marks time. Old and new, waxing and waning, it shines in the sky making magic in the evening.

Is this the month of the blue one?

What to do?

"Oh" she said, "I saw this face with so much going in and coming out of the head -- I loved it!! I thought it was exactly ----- me!! And it showed how my head was full of confusion and thoughts and things flying around in it. It said exactly how I felt."

Is this our reality when we are faced with decisions?

Worlds within Worlds

Enter the world of "Let's Pretend" -- allowing one's mind to accept what it knows is impossible -- suspending disbelief . What is the opposite of this? Real worlds that are within worlds, even a dream that turns to reality ten years later, are both within us yet elsewhere...

and are not "pretend". Worlds within worlds are reality.

Suspending Belief

Worlds within Worlds. WWW - you thought it meant world wide web. Submerge yourself in a tropical sea and a world within a world opens up. It is surreal.

We all suspend belief. How could we live otherwise?

Balance

Space implies non-existence. Yet we fill space.

Something from nothing and negative space suggest the state of non-being. It appears as though these come from nothing.

How do we measure "nothing"? How do we fill space?

From Nothing to Something

In an earlier post I wrote about the consequences of lines. I wrote that with lines "the space [in a drawing] speaks. Until it comes from nothing to something."

Last week I wrote about negative space saying it was non-existent, but now I have confused myself and have to rethink my position.

The concepts are related. They require more reflection. I suspect I will return to this theme a few more times before I'm done. Is it not limitless?

Seeking

I seem to  always have a question with each work -- whatever the medium. I seem to be always seeking.

 Seeking the next step.
 Seeking the way forward.

Breaking Free

Are all the parts desperate to break away, or merely disparate bits of paper? Is it host to them or might this be no more than a paper chase? There is a sense of fumbling around here, without direction but with mistakes. How do we get from there to where we are?

Once the path becomes clear it all swoops away, released, like a swallow.

This is one of the pieces in my new show at Howes Hall Gallery, 24-30 July 2012.

Lines: more consequences

One line also can change the whole piece. It is then impossible to stop - one must continue until the space speaks. Until it comes from nothing to something.

One line starts it and the next step is then made clear.

It could lead into error or into completion. It all starts with a line and its consequences.

The Abstract - just questions

Does our conscious mind insist on seeing something in an image? Anything at all?

Is it a need to make sense of the world, or sense of our worlds?
More questions. No answers.

This is a landscape. There are trees with roots, wind, moon and what else? Does anyone see anything else?
